In my last post, The "ooh, shiny!" factor, I talked about how I have been adding daily writing back into my schedule. It's been going great so far, although it's kind of disappointing when I have to stop writing and go to work. I'm taking that as a good sign, though, because it means that this is what I'm meant to be doing.
I was recently reminded, I believe through twitter, that StoryADay May was coming up. I've never participated before, but this year it comes at an absolutely perfect time for me. My primary goal in adding daily writing to my schedule was simply to write more, rather than just having ideas, or wishing I wrote more, or wondering if I'm good enough... After all, you only get better by writing more often.
I had also figured that I should use prompts when I didn't have something specific to write, to ensure that I actually wrote every day. That idea got me a little sidetracked pretty quickly, though, when a prompt I used gave me a cool idea for a novel. I've been actively developing the idea during my daily writing time, so I'm still making productive use of the time, I'm just not doing the "stringing words together" part of writing. I'm going to have to learn to avoid turning prompts into novel ideas during May!
Still, StoryADay May is a good reminder of my original goal. It's a great time to practice writing more, finishing what you start, and working on good writing habits. I'm really excited to try it out. Oh, and did I mention that it's free to sign up? There's a built-in community, plus you get a month's worth of daily writing prompts to your mailbox (or not, if you don't want them).
I've allowed myself a couple of days off in May due to specific engagements that will take up all of my energy during those days, but other than that, I am going to see where this takes me. I've already written my story for today, and I'm ready for tomorrow!
